September Meeting Report

Six regular members and six officers were present to install Solaris 2.7 on our new Sparc 10 graciously donated by SemaTech, thanks to Michael Shaw.  The guards at ARL were kind enough to allow the installation to complete even though it was well past our nine o'clock deadline.  The installation was a little late beginning, because Ron Roberts didn't expect Michael Rice to bring the media and an external CDROM drive.  But he zipped home and returned with the Sparc 10 and other equipment.  One of the one gigabyte drives Ron brought wouldn't work, but Michael was able to install the base OS on the other one.
 
There were no objections to appoint Michael Rice as programs officer. Officers present for vote included:  Darrel, Gil, Johnny, Lindsay, Luis, and Ron.  The elected programs officer, Brenden Corkerly, was unfortunately transferred to Houston almost immediately after his election.  We hope we can keep Michael a little longer.

In other news, Ron was able to pick up the linux.cactus.org PC and deliver it to Lindsay in the dead of night in a parking lot in front of a hardware store in a strip mall.   Lindsay took it to Lindsay Computer Systems [no nepotism] and got it fixed.  Special thanks to Rick Lindsay--recommend him to your friends.  He's located at 8222 Jamestown Drive near 183 and Anderson Lane.  Phone number is 719-5257.

Ron also picked up an external drive enclosure that SemaTech had donated some time ago.  Except for qmail, the new system is ready to go.  We have to make an appointment with Bob Guswick of Realtime.Net [also the bga in bga.com] to make the conversion.  Ron has backed up most of the source packages, WEB page, named zone files, and various config files in /etc.
 

December Program

John Ratliff of Sun Microsystems will discuss how to get from Garage.Com to IPO.Com. He may also be able to give us additional details about Sun's Open Source program.  So tell your friends--it should be a good one.


Membership Report

Michael Rice has been active and supportive of CACTUS for a while.  Now we can officially welcome him as a new member not only because he just paid his dues but also as the newly elected Program Chairman.  Let's also welcome Thomas Bodine as a new member.

This has collected over the past couple of months due to the death of the linux system where the latest records were kept.  We shall thank B.T. Corkery, M.H. Khan, David Friedman and Michael Rayburn for renewing their membership.  linux.cactus.org is now mostly back in service. See elsewhere in the newsletter for full details.

While we are profusely thanking people let me especially thank Lindsay Haisley, Gil Kloepfer, Michael Rice, and Ron Roberts for their major contribution in resurrecting the linux machine. Yet, the fact that CACTUS has more than one system brings up an interesting question.  How do we sync up user accounts on multiple systems? Or even should users have more than one account? My proposal is for the user to be responsible for up his/her own data. CACTUS sole responsibility should be to keep the systems running with as few crashes as possible.

CACTUS Meeting Location: Applied Research Labs

CACTUS meets on the third Thursday of each month at the Applied Research Labs (ARL) in the JJ Jake Pickle Research Campus (JJ PRC). We'll meet in the main auditorium located directly behind the guard's desk and main lobby.

Please do not show up earlier than 6:20 pm on the specified day. Enter through the main entrance at 10000 Burnet Road for ARL:UT. Tell the guard that you are here for the CACTUS meeting. You will be required to sign a log book, but not required to wear a badge. The guards will direct you to the auditorium entrance. Limited parking in the front of the building is available, but more extensive parking is available in the large parking lot just north of the ARL building. After 6:30 pm, all entrances to JJ PRC, except for the Burnet Road entrance, are closed and locked. You can still enter the parking lot in front of the ARL building. No parking tags are necessary after 6:00 pm. See map for further details.
