October Meeting Program

This month CACTUS welcomes Fred Behning of the IBM eServer Executive Briefing Center. Fred's presentation will cover both Linux and IBM's AIX on p5 Power architecture servers. The virtualization capability of both operating environments will be demonstrated, along with how they can share processor and I/O resources. Additionally, systems management, self-optimization features, and other technologies will be explored that make the p5 servers with AIX and Linux extremely flexible and lead to very high potential system utilization.

Note that the meeting minutes from last meeting (or the one before) were AGAIN not available at newsletter publication time.

The next CACTUS meeting will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2005 at 7:00 PM (doors open at 6:30 PM for pizza and informal discussion), in the auditorium of UT Applied Research Laboratories. (See end of newsletter for directions to the facility).

InstallFest Program for November

As discussed at the September meeting, we're looking to try to have an "Install Fest" for the November meeting. The idea is for members to bring their computers (with network capability) and we can break-off into groups to confer with other members for assistance installing open source operating systems and software.

We need to know what the membership would be interested in installing. This way, we can download some of the larger software packages in advance (to save time and UT's bandwidth). Examples of software we could install (and that folks have mentioned in the past) are Debian or Fedora Linux, Asterisk, and FreeBSD. It would be great if members who simply didn't know where to begin installing certain software could leave November's meeting with a working OS or software pacakge on their computer.

Please send suggestions for this meeting to installfest [at] cactus <dot> org, and place INSTALLFEST in the subject line for easy identification. Additionally, we will have some time at the October meeting for suggestions. Be sure to attend the November meeting -- this will be an exciting event and a great opportunity to exchange ideas and information.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Those attending should bring their own network cables (long ones, at least 15 ft. (5 meters)), power strip, and anything else they need to get their computer operational as we will have limited resources and time.

Directions to Meeting Location

CACTUS meets on the third Thursday of each month at the Applied Research Laboratories (ARL) in the JJ Pickle Research Campus (JJ PRC). We'll meet in the main auditorium located directly behind the guard's desk and main lobby.

Please do not show up earlier than 6:20 PM on the specified day. Enter through the main entrance at 10000 Burnet Road for ARL. Tell the guard that you are here for the CACTUS meeting. You will be required to sign a log book, but not required to wear a badge. The guards will direct you to the auditorium entrance. Limited parking in the front of the building is available, but more extensive parking is available in the large parking lot just north of the ARL building. After 6:30 pm, all entrances to JJ PRC, except for the Burnet Road entrance, are closed and locked. You can still enter the parking lot in front of the ARL building. No parking tags are necessary after 6:00 PM (but you will need to inform the guard in the booth that you are attending a meeting at ARL). See map for further details.
