July Meeting Program

This month's presentation will be more "Pizza Eating" by the CACTUS Membership....and hopefully some insightful discussion.

The next CACTUS meeting will be held on Thursday, July 20, 2006 at 7:00 PM (doors open at 6:30 PM for pizza and informal discussion), in the auditorium of UT Applied Research Laboratories. (See end of newsletter for directions to the facility).

June Meeting Report

With no formal program, the meeting began with a discussion of Gil Kloepfer's /bin/cat article. Gil continued the thread with a reading of "Ode to Spot"--a poem written by Data of Star Trek Next Generation.

Member Dave Wieboldt mentioned that he had mailed the officers mailing list suggesting a program, but that he had only received a notice that his submission was waiting for a moderator's approval. We speculated who might be on the moderator list for that list. Gil suggested James Johnson. At late arrival pointed out that the moderators are Randy, Brian, and Ray Solanik.

Someone sent Randy Zagar email about getting help with Bubba, who was down again.

Our lovely and talented president, Ron Roberts, pointed out that the newsletter had correctly stated that "CACTUS is a pizza eating organization." He called for a motion to officially include that in the purpose section of our bylaws. Wielding his shaky understanding of Roberts' rules of order, he quickly ramrodded approval of his resolution. The dark details are always in implementation.

(Editor's note: I think by "Roberts' Rules of Order" he meant "Ron Roberts' Rules")

With the subject open, Gil Kloepfer proceeded to demonstrate his perl scripts that he uses to generate the newsletter--in particular, the one that automatically obfuscates an email address.

When Lindsay Haisley arrived, we gave him the projector so he could give us a tour of membership database, and it's web interface. He also showed us the web interface to Mailman, which drives lists.cactus.org. While touting it's security, he brought up the page for the officer's list, which conveniently displayed all of the moderator's passwords. Unfortunately, your humble scribe was not quick enough to capture any.

Ron Roberts committed to restoring the homes on sparc.cactus.org. Ray Solanik agreed to give him permissions to do so. This has since been accomplished from a backup from October, 2003.

Directions to Meeting Location (IMPORTANT UPDATED INFO!)

CACTUS meets on the third Thursday of each month at the Applied Research Laboratories (ARL) in the JJ Pickle Research Campus (JJ PRC). We'll meet in the main auditorium located directly behind the guard's desk and main lobby.

Please do not show up earlier than 6:20 PM on the specified day. Enter through the main entrance at 10000 Burnet Road for ARL. Tell the guard that you are here for the CACTUS meeting. You will be required to sign a log book, but not required to wear a badge. The guards will direct you to the auditorium entrance. Limited parking in the front of the building is available.

IMPORTANT: The side parking lots inside of the Pickle Research Campus will be inaccessible to the main ARL entrance until sometime in early 2007 due to building construction. Therefore, if there is no parking available near the front entrance, you will need to find alternative parking across the street from the ARL building. Please be considerate and do not use the parking right outside the Jack In The Box.
