CACTUS Meeting Schedule and Map

CACTUS meets on the third Thursday of each month at The University of Texas' Applied Research Labs (UT:ARL) in the JJ Jake Pickle Research Campus (JJ PRC) in Austin, Texas. We'll meet in the main auditorium located directly behind the guard's desk and main lobby. The program starts at 7:00pm with refreshments served at 6:30pm.

2003 Meeting Schedule

January 16      Elections

                Bob Izenberg will present information about House
		Resolution 2281, the Digital Millenium Copyright Act,
		from a content provider or publisher's point of view.

February 20     George Kraft IV, Senior Software Engineer at IBM's
                Linux Technology Center and chairman of the Linux
		Standard Base (LSB) will present information about the LSB.

                The main presentation will be preceded by the first in a
		series of tutorials on UNIX and UNIX-like distributions.
		Lindsay Haisley will present a tutorial on the installation
		of the Debian Linux distribution. The install demonstration
		will cover the basic installation of Debian using the Internet.

March 20        Lenny Tropiano et. al. of VoIPing, LLC (www.voiping.com),
                will give a presentation on "SIP from the IP Telephony Fire-hose"
                and also an interactive demonstration using freely available VoIP
                open source tools and software.
                
                VoIPing, LLC is a Central Texas privately owned and operated
                partnership. They specialize in IT Consulting and Services, with
                a strong emphasis on converged networks, Unix operating systems and
                Voice over IP (IP Telephony).

May 15          CACTUS' participation in the USENIX Association annual
                technical conference in San Antonio

                Installing FreeBSD 4.x in 30 minutes or less

June 19, 2003   EFF-Austin President Jon Lebkowsky, EFF-Austin Legislative
		Co-Leaders Adina Levin & Chip Rosenthal, and others will
		review the technology legislation targeted by EFF-Austin
		during the recent Texas legislative session, and will
		provide an insider glimpse of the lobbying process.

		Nathan Isburgh of the High Technology Institute at
		Austin Community College, will present the first in a series
		of 3 tutorials on configuring, compiling, and installing
		kernels for Linux before the main presentation.

July 17, 2003   Mike Erwin and Jamie Pugh will give a presentation on the
		Gentoo Linux distribution. Gentoo Linux is distributed as
		source and compiled during the installation process resulting
		in an installation optimized for the hardware on which it
		is running. 

		Randy Zagar will present a tutorial on Firewall Builder
		(www.fwbuilder.org) which is a graphical firewall
		designer/compiler that can generate rulesets for OpenBSD
		packet-filter, ipchains, iptables, and Cisco pix firewalls.

		The previously scheduled tutorial by Nathan Isburgh on
		configuring, compiling and installing Linux kernels has
		been postponed.

Aug 21, 2003    Dewey Coffman of Net-Seive, Inc. will describe his company's
		commercial products for combating spam, porn, information
		leak, and computer viruses.

		Jay Engh of the High Technology Institute at
		Austin Community College, will present the second in a series
		of 3 tutorials on Linux.

		Over pizza before the start of the meeting, SCO's assault
		òn Open Source is likely to generate a lively discussion.

		of Matrix NetSystems, Inc.

		Nathan Isburgh of the High Technology Institute at

Oct 16, 2003	Gil Kloepfer, CACTUS officer, will give a presentation
		on FreeBSD. (Focus TBD).

2002 Meeting Schedule

Feb 21, 2002    Main Program: Mike Erwin (formerly of OuterNet Connection
                Strategies, an Austin-area ISP) speaks about computer
                forensics and security.

                Chip Rosenthal, of Unicom Systems Development.
                Recipient of Austin Chronicle's 1997 Tech Award for
                "Best Usenet Watchdog & Helpful Guy" for his fight
                against SPAM,  will discuss his battle with a
                California company that is attempting to commandeer
                his primary domain that he has been using since 1990.

March 21       Chad Kissinger of OnRamp (onr.com) will speak about HR 1542,
               the Tauzin/Dingell bill.

April 18       Tim Trader, of VERITAS Software, will be presenting
               VERITAS Volume Manager and FIle System.  These products work
	       across multiple UNIX platforms and provide a great deal of
	       functionality.  The soon to be released version will now run
	       on Linux and AIX.  

May 16         Larry Thompson and members of RFD Associates will describe
               the the Argus-Systems PitBull LX product which provides
               e-Commerce environments with the most formidable level of
               protection, from the inside out.  

June 20        Ralph Kirkley, head hunter extrodinaire with decades of
               experience in the Austin area 

July 11        Eric Raymond: best-selling author and noted open-source activist.

August 15      Lindsay Haisley presents a tutorial on Courier ("Qmail on steriods").
               A mail tranfer agent.
		
Sept 19        Steve Dobbelstein & Kevin Corry: Enterprise Volume Management System
	       (An IBM Open Source Linux project).
               EVMS includes a kernel space runtime and a modularized engine
               that provides APIs for the creation, configuration, management,
               and deletion of volumes, volume groups, partitions and disks.
		  
October 17     Kevin P. Dankwardt: Embedded Linux.
               The speaker is founder and President of K Computing, a Silicon
               Valley training and consulting firm. He has spent most of the
               last 9 years designing, developing, and delivering technical
               training for such subjects as Unix system programming, Linux
               device drivers, real-time programming, and parallel-programming
               for various organizations world-wide. He received his Ph.D. in
               Computer Science, in 1988.

Please do not show up earlier than 6:20 pm on the specified day. Enter through the main entrance at 10000 Burnet Road for Applied Research Laboratories of the University of Texas (ARL:UT) Tell the guard that you are there for the CACTUS meeting. You will be required to sign a log book, but not required to wear a badge. The guards will direct you to the auditorium entrance.

Limited parking in the front of the building is available, but more extensive parking is available in the large parking lot just north of the ARL building on the J.J. Pickle Research Campus (JJ PRC). After 6:30 pm, all entrances to the JJ PRC, except for the Burnet Road entrance (Read Granberry) are closed and locked. You can still enter the parking lot in front of the ARL building. No parking tags are necessary after 6:00 pm. See map for further details.
