June 19th CACTUS Meeting

CACTUS Meeting Location: Applied Research Labs

CACTUS meets on the third Thursday of each month at the Applied Research Labs (ARL) in the JJ Jake Pickle Research Campus (JJ PRC). We'll meet in the main auditorium located directly behind the guard's desk and main lobby.

Please do not show up earlier than 6:20 pm on the specified day. Enter through the main entrance at 10000 Burnet Road for ARL:UT. Tell the guard that you are here for the CACTUS meeting. You will be required to sign a log book, but not required to wear a badge. The guards will direct you to the auditorium entrance. Limited parking in the front of the building is available, but more extensive parking is available in the large parking lot just north of the ARL building. After 6:30 pm, all entrances to JJ PRC, except for the Burnet Road entrance, are closed and locked. You can still enter the parking lot in front of the ARL building. No parking tags are necessary after 6:00 pm. See map for further details.

Online maps are available at:

As always, please leave the facility as you saw it when you arrived. So let's clean up all pizza and soda items before we leave. Thanks and hope to see all of you there.

May Meeting Report

Thirty members attended the May meeting. Tom Painter had good news about the O'Reilly book order [see below]. Bob Izenburg from Signet passes around a signup sheet for folks interested in taking the tour of the SmartNAP facilities. Luis Basto, acting for Jack McKinney, then introduced the presenter, Mike Gibson from SGI.

Mr. Gibson apologized for missing the last meeting and solicited questions from the audience. SGI transitioned its entire line of products last October with the introduction of the O^2. The new line has a new memory architecture with builtin video compression. It's based on the R5000 MIPS chip. He claims that the MIPS line of processors have outsold all other processors combined: Intel, RISC-6000, Alpha, PA-RISC, etc.

SGI recently acquired Cray Research and has been intergrated their HyperCube design into some of its high end systems such as the Origin 200. It's bussless and scales up to over 100 CPUs.

We then got to see the SGI WEBForce offerings. The membership continually harassed the poor man wanting to know if it would run on their VT100. But he finally got through all hundred or so foils.

Thanks to Mike Gibson and SGI for the May presentation.

O'Reilly Book Order

by Tom Painter

The books are ready to be picked up. Please bring your check for the full amount of your order (including the books on backorder). Given the quantity of books, I ask that you pick them up rather than having me haul them around. I live in NW Austin near 183 and Spicewood Springs Road. Email me at bookorder [at] cactus <dot> org to arrange pickup. If necessary, special arrangements can be made.

Thank you for your recent purchase from CACTUS. As was announced, we qualified for a 50% discount. Additionally, there is no sales tax being charged by the vendor. Full payment will be collected at the time of receipt of books. Backorders will be filled as they arrive. Payment must be made by a CACTUS member. No third party checks can be accepted.

Please make checks or money orders payable to CACTUS.
