CACTUS.ORG System News

by Lindsay Haisley

Jack McKinney and I both have plans to continue to improve the service to CACTUS members provided by our system. Some of this will take some planning and work over a period of time, but there are a number of piecemeal improvements that can be made, now that the disk space crunch has been alleviated somewhat.

Although many CACTUS members have their own UNIX accounts elsewhere, one of the reasons many of us use is to provide an external perspective to help troubleshoot Internet-related problems. Tops on my wish list for for some time has been traceroute and lynx, both of which are now installed and available to everyone, along with their man pages. If you have either of these compiled locally in your home directories, please remove them, along with their sources, to help us conserve space.

One of my favorite editors for some time has been Joseph Allen's excellent joe editor. Although it lacks the sophistication and features of emacs, it's still an excellent editor with many features for programming, mail composition and general editing work. Both joe and it's man page are now available on There have been some requests to put emacs on the system, which is a possibility if sufficient space is available. We'll try to keep the membership informed on any progress we make on this front.

Sources on are being relocated and organized in /var/local/src, and are publicly available for anyone who wants to ftp them. If you have requests for utilities or other software which you'd like to see available on the system, please send email to mckinney [at] cactus <dot> org or fmouse [at] cactus <dot> org.

CACTUS Meeting Location: Applied Research Labs

CACTUS meets on the third Thursday of each month at the UT Applied Research Labs (ARL) in the JJ (Jake) Pickle Research Campus (JJ PRC). We'll meet in the main auditorium located directly behind the guard's desk and main lobby.

Please do not show up earlier than 6:20 pm on the specified day. Enter through the main entrance at 10000 Burnet Road for ARL:UT. Tell the guard that you are here for the CACTUS meeting. You will be required to sign a log book, but not required to wear a badge. The guards will direct you to the auditorium entrance. Limited parking in the front of the building is available, but more extensive parking is available in the large parking lot just north of the ARL building. After 6:30 pm, all entrances to JJ PRC, except for the Burnet Road entrance, are closed and locked. You can still enter the parking lot in front of the ARL building. No parking tags are necessary after 6:00 pm. See maps for further details.

Online maps are available at:

As always, please leave the facility as you saw it when you arrived. So let's clean up all pizza and soda items before we leave. Thanks and hope to see all of you there.
