February Meeting

The next CACTUS meeting will be held on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at 7:00 PM (doors open at 6:30 PM for beer and informal discussion) at the Highland Lanes Bowling Alley. It is located at the intersection of 183 and Burnet.

Annual Elections (again)

by Randy Zagar

First item on our agenda for Thursdays' meeting is Officer Elections. We get to do this over, as Mangia Pizza closed its doors and we ended up without quorum. The reasons for showing up haven't changed:

  1. You want to help CACTUS.
  2. You like beer.
  3. You want to be there to refuse your nomination.
Other likely topics of discussion will be:

The meeting room at Highland Lanes (aka The "Birthday" room) has enough seating for 20 or thirty people. I am unsure about the state of wi-fi, but cellular signal strength is good. Anyone who can tether their cell phone to a wi-fi router should bring it.

The Cluster Project vs. Single Sign-On

by Randy Zagar

No real progress on the Cluster Project since the last meeting. I've been focusing my efforts on finding a single-sign-on solution (for web and shell access) that I actually understand how to implement. So far, it's been a toss-up between writing something (which I'll then have to support), or deploying something I don't understand yet (e.g. LDAP Servers, or Ganymede).

None of these are just run-and-go services, they require thought. I've scheduled some time with Jon Abbey (the author of Ganymede) to see if he can help us deploy something quickly. If that doesn't work out, I need an LDAP Server guru.

If that doesn't work out either, I'll continue with my Perl hacking.
